Youth of Enterprise (YOE) Spotlight: Pelumi Abiwo’s Internship Success Story

Introduction

Meet Pelumi Abiwo! During his YOE internship, he worked with Coronation Merchant Bank as a Card/Domestic Operations Officer, where he was eventually retained.

Pelumi first learned about the YOE Internship Programme through social media. Seeing it as a great opportunity, he applied and was selected, marking the start of a transformative experience in his professional journey.

We asked Pelumi about his YOE experience, and he had this to say:

“Being part of the YOE Internship Programme was a great opportunity for me. From the moment I got my admission letter, I looked forward to gaining practical experience in the financial sector. The three-week orientation helped me understand workplace expectations and professional etiquette. By the time I started at Coronation Merchant Bank, I felt more prepared to learn and adjust to the work environment.”

What challenges did you face during the programme, and how did it impact your growth?

Adjusting to the fast-paced banking environment was a major challenge. Domestic operations require accuracy and efficiency, especially when handling fund transfers and investment bookings. Initially, the pressure to process transactions quickly while ensuring zero errors was overwhelming, but with time, I improved my time management and attention to detail.

Understanding complex banking procedures was another learning curve. However, by seeking guidance from colleagues, attending training sessions, and practicing hands-on tasks, I became more confident in handling financial operations.

Collaboration was also essential in my role. Coordinating with different departments to ensure seamless transactions required effective communication, and these experiences significantly improved my interpersonal skills and teamwork abilities.

What role has the YOE programme played in your professional success and accomplishments?

The YOE Internship Programme has played a pivotal role in shaping my professional journey, providing me with hands-on experience, industry knowledge, and essential skills that will benefit me in the long run.

One key lesson I took away was time management, as balancing my internship responsibilities with personal activities helped me become more organized and efficient.

What level of mentorship and support did you receive from colleagues and leaders in your organization?

During my YOE Internship Programme, I received a high level of mentorship and support from both my colleagues and organizational leaders, which played a crucial role in my learning and professional growth. From the very beginning, my supervisors and senior colleagues provided me with guidance and training, ensuring I understood the core responsibilities of my role as a Domestic Operations Officer. They were always available to answer my questions and offer constructive feedback, which helped me quickly adapt to the banking environment.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals who shared their insights on financial processes, risk management, and best practices in banking operations. Their mentorship not only improved my technical skills in fund transfers and investment bookings but also instilled in me a strong work ethic and attention to detail.

What word of advice do you have for applicants and current interns?

See the internship as a learning opportunity. Be proactive, ask questions, and embrace challenges. The YOE Internship Programme offers an incredible platform for growth, and making the most of it can set the foundation for a successful career.
