When a social media ad for the Youth of Enterprise (YOE) Internship Programme popped up on Mariya Auwal’s phone, she had no idea it would mark the beginning of a life-changing chapter. Today, she is not only a proud alumna of the YOE programme but a rising professional in the banking industry. A proof of what’s possible when potential meets opportunity. Mariya’s journey began with a simple click. “I was intrigued by the promise of hands-on experience and mentorship,” she recalls. “I applied, hoping to gain clarity about my career direction. What I got was far more.
Let’s delve into how her experience during the YOE Internship Programme shaped her professionally.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the internship programme?
Balancing multiple tasks and meeting tight deadlines was a challenge at the beginning. I had to quickly learn how to prioritize, manage my time effectively, and stay focused under pressure. There were also moments of self-doubt. I sometimes questioned whether I was good enough or if I truly belonged in such a competitive environment. But instead of letting that hold me back, I chose to lean into the experience, focus on my strengths, and seek help when I needed it. That mindset really helped me grow.
What impact did the programme have on your professional growth?
The YOE programme was a game-changer for me. It helped me develop both soft and technical skills—especially communication, adaptability, and teamwork. I also became more confident and intentional in the way I approached tasks and interacted with colleagues. Most importantly, it gave me a clearer understanding of my career path. I gained hands-on experience in financial services, customer relations, and problem-solving—all of which helped solidify my interest in the banking sector and even supported my entrepreneurial interests.
What was your internship experience like at Access Bank?
Interning at Access Bank was both exciting and empowering. I was welcomed into a team that was supportive and willing to teach. My supervisors and colleagues did not only give me space to learn but also pushed me to take initiatives and improve. The environment allowed me to apply what I had learned during the YOE orientation and throughout my internship. I didn’t just grow professionally—I grew personally. The experience stretched me out and laid a strong foundation for my future.
What advice would you give to current or aspiring YOE interns?
Make the most of the opportunity. Be curious, stay open to learning, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you ever feel stuck, speak up. Every challenge is a chance to learn something new about yourself and your abilities. Your internship is more than just a placement—it’s a steppingstone. Use it wisely, build connections, and believe in your growth. It truly changed my life, and it can do the same for you.
Mariya Auwal’s story is one of courage, growth, and transformation—just like the thousands of others who have passed through the Youth of Enterprise Internship Programme. Her journey reminds us that sometimes, all it takes is one decision, one opportunity, and one ‘yes’ to spark a lifelong career.
