Meet Amina! During her YOE Internship, she worked with NGX Regulation Limited. In just six months, Amina went from zero to a hundred percent with her computer literacy skills. Though she wasn’t accepted into the programme on her first attempt, her resilience and determination landed her an internship slot on her second attempt.

We asked Amina to share her experience with the YOE community and here is what she had to say.

Hello, my name is Amina Abdulraheem, I am a YOE Cohort II intern. During my time on the programme I was placed at NGX Regulation Limited. I learned about the YOE Internship Programme on social media after someone in my network made a post on WhatsApp. Although I applied for Cohort I, I wasn’t accepted onto the programme because I didn’t meet all the qualifications. However, I didn’t let that discourage me. I remained determined and applied again by Cohort II, meeting all the requirements. Fortunately, I got accepted.

My YOE experience was fascinating. The learning opportunities were phenomenal and beyond my expectations. The support from the YOE team was also splendid. I am grateful for the privilege of being part of such a rewarding experience.

What challenges did you face during the programme and how did it impact your growth?

A challenge that I faced during my internship was adapting to the fast-paced nature of the work environment. Initially, I found it overwhelming to keep up with the demands of tasks assigned by different supervisors. However, this challenge pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to develop better time management and organizational skills.

What role has the YOE programme played in your professional success and accomplishments?

The YOE programme has played a pivotal role in shaping my professional journey in several ways. A major accomplishment I recorded was gaining hands-on experience at NGX, a reputable organisation in Nigeria. This experience did not only enhance my technical skills but also broadened my mind and knowledge.

How have the skills and knowledge you gained during your internship helped you in your current role/pursuit?

The skills and knowledge I gained during my internship have been invaluable in my current role. For instance, my experience at NGX Regulations Limited gave me a broader understanding of the Nigerian Equity Market, the different securities traded and the functions of each department within the organisation. Additionally, the hands-on experience I gained from tasks such as analysing and visualising market data, report writing, conducting research and performing various administrative tasks, has equipped me with practical skills that I can leverage in various aspects of my professional endeavours. Overall, the internship has enhanced my technical competencies, boosted my confidence in tackling new challenges and equipped me to navigate complex situations in my current role. I am super grateful to YOE for this opportunity.

What level of mentorship and support did you receive from colleagues and leaders in your organisation?

l received a high level of support and close mentorship from my supervisors and HODs at NGX. My supervisors were always willing to offer guidance and assistance whenever I encountered challenges or needed clarification on tasks. They took their time to explain concepts and provide constructive feedback on my work, which greatly facilitated my learning and professional growth. Moreover, the Excos at NGX Regulations Limited were actively involved in providing mentorship and support.

What word of advice do you have for applicants and current interns?

My advice to applicants and current interns in the YOE internship programme is to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. Be proactive in seeking out new experiences, asking questions, and building relationships with colleagues and mentors. Remember that challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but they are also opportunities for growth and development. Stay resilient, open-minded, and adaptable, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
