The August 2025 edition of the Youth of Enterprise (YOE) Masterclass empowered participants with actionable insights on the theme “Mapping Your Career Path: Setting Goals That Guide Your Growth.” Led by Mr. Edwin Nnabude, the session was both engaging and practical, as he drew from his own professional journey to illustrate the power of goal setting and how young professionals can harness it to build intentional and rewarding careers.
This article takes a closer look at the key insights from the Masterclass, highlighting the strategies and practical tips shared to help young professionals design career paths that align with their aspirations and growth.
Why goal setting matters
Mr. Nnabude highlighted four key reasons why goal setting is critical:
- Limited resources: Time, money, intellect, and relationships are finite. Goals help maximize impact with what you have.
- A tool for personal growth: Even in addiction recovery, one of the first steps toward healing is setting meaningful goals. Purpose sustains progress.
- A leadership necessity: Leaders inspire by painting a clear vision. Without goals, it’s impossible to carry people along.
- Career resilience: Setbacks and successes are inevitable; a clear vision anchors you through the ups and downs.
The “Start with Why” Model
Using Simon Sinek’s framework, Mr. Nnabude explained that every strong career path is built on three layers:

He stressed that too many individuals and organizations start with what (“I’m a banker” / “We sell products”) rather than why, which limits their impact.
Practical Exercises: Finding Your “Why, How, What”
During the session, participants engaged in live exercises to apply the framework to their own careers. One attendee reframed his telecommunications business beyond just as selling gadgets, to easing connectivity for Nigerians through hybrid distribution models. Another, a travel consultant, discovered her “why” rooted in her passion for creating memorable travel experiences inspired by her parents’ journeys.
One of the lessons noted from the exercise is that purpose goes beyond profit or salary; it’s about meaning, impact, and what excites you.
How to Discover Your “Why”
Mr. Nnabude suggested five practical steps to help young professionals discover their “why”. These steps are highlighted below:
- Look back at your life and ask, “what have I always been good at?”
- Identify persistent pain or excitement; passions often come from emotional experiences.
- Reflect on contribution and impact by asking the question “where do I add the most value?”
- Ask others for input, sometimes they see strengths you overlook.
- Test it, does it excite you, and does it extend beyond your job into life as a whole?
Setting SMART Goals
SMART means goals must be: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Once your vision is clear, break it into outcomes using SMART goals:
- Short term (1–2 years) e.g., earn a certification.
- Midterm (3–5 years) e.g., expand your professional network.
- Long term (5–10 years) e.g., build an organization or movement aligned with your “why.”
Key Lessons from the Masterclass Session
- People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. A clear vision inspires trust, loyalty, and emotional connection.
- Your “why” anchors your career path, especially when facing uncertainty.
- Goal setting is not just a productivity hack; it is a leadership tool and a survival strategy in today’s complex career landscape.
In conclusion, the August 2025 Masterclass was a powerful call to move beyond vague ambitions and short-term gains, to building careers rooted in clarity of purpose. Through stories, practical frameworks, and live exercises, Mr. Edwin Nnabude left participants equipped not just with strategies, but with a deeper conviction to take ownership of their professional journeys.
